Sometimes you just need more BASS!

...And that's when a powered subwoofer can really help out.

A powered subwoofer is a box containing one or more woofers that ONLY reproduce the lowest bass notes, typically no higher than about 150Hz.

Surround Speakers
Exotic Speaker Designs
Powered Subwoofers
Sub-Satellite Systems

The box also contains a built in amplifier to produce the loudness desired without having to draw on your existing amplifier and strain it. Most powered subwoofers today can get their signals through a subwoofer output or other output jack on your amp or receiver and many can even be hooked up to conventional speaker wires. Since the human ear cannot tell where deep bass comes from, the powered sub can be placed anywhere within your room, even behind the couch.

There are several typical reasons to own a subwoofer:

  • You don't have room for big speakers but you want deep bass. A subwoofer can be combined with a quality pair of small speakers to create a wonderful full range system without big tower speakers.
  • You rent a lot of movies but the Terminator sounds like Pee-Wee-Herman through your small system. Pump him up!
  • You are a music lover but those big speakers you spent a lot of money for don't reach down low enough now that you heard your buddy's system. You need a deep bass solution that doesn't require you to throw away your existing speakers.
  • You really don't like the people downstairs.... (just kidding!)

The differences between powered subs:

Circuit City carries powered subs from Velodyne®, JBL®, Infinity®, DCM® and Audio Source® at prices from about $200 on up to $1000. As you go up the line in price what you get sonicallyis:

  • Added Volume - due to bigger built in amplifiers. Our small subs have 50 watt amps while our top of the line Velodyne® sports a whopping 250 watts with 500 watt peak capability!
  • Deeper Bass - Larger cabinets, larger and multiple drivers go deeper... right down to 20Hz in some cases!
  • Better Bass- Using better components and materials, better bass means that what you hear will have less distortion and be quicker and cleaner - like real music!

We would be pleased to show you how much a powered sub can add to your musical and home theater enjoyment. Stop in for a test "drive" anytime!
