Mother's Day Brings High Sales for KFC Restaurants
May 8, 1997 -- What tops mom's wish list for Mother's Day?
Flowers, candy and ... chicken? That's right; Mother's Day is
KFC's biggest sales day of the year by far. In fact, last year,
KFC's Mother's Day sales hit a record, increasing 33 percent over
an average Sunday. That means nearly 10 million pieces of chicken
and almost $17 million in sales.
Eating out on Mother's Day is an increasing trend. According to a 1996 National Restaurant Association survey, 30 percent of Americans treat mom to dinner out on Mother's Day, making it the second most-popular holiday to dine out, right behind birthdays.
"KFC is a family tradition on Mother's Day because we provide hearty, home-cooked food without the hassle of actually cooking at home," said Randy Gier, senior vice president-marketing, KFC Corporation. "We cater to the entire family's needs by providing something for everyone, so that the whole family can sit down together at mealtime."
Mother's Day traditions add up to more sales for other industries as well. AT & T expects a record 135 million phone calls; the National Confectioners Association reports selling $450 million worth of chocolate; and Roses, Inc., predicts delivering more than 150 million roses -- all for Mother's Day.
Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp. (KFC), based in Louisville, Ky., is the world's most popular chicken restaurant chain specializing in both fried and roasted chicken pieces and homestyle sides.
