Florence Henderson, America's Favorite TV Mom, to Announce Winner of KFC®/Family Circle National Mother's Day Card Contest

LOUISVILLE, Ky -- Florence Henderson, loved by two generations of kids as television mom "Carol Brady" of the "The Brady Bunch," is joining a New Jersey fifth-grader to unveil the student's winning card in the 1997 KFC/Family Circle All-American Salute to Mothers national greeting card contest.

Henderson, the official spokesperson for the contest, is introducing the winning artist --11-year-old Katie Cowden of Freehold, N.J. -- for a celebration at the Empire State Building in New York on May 1. During the unveiling ceremony, Katie's entire fifth-grade class is presenting Henderson with a Mother's Day surprise.

"It warms my heart to see not only the artistic talent kids have today, but the love and appreciation they have towards their moms," said Henderson. "I congratulate each participant for their beautiful and unique cards."

Launched in the November 19 issue of Family Circle magazine, the contest challenged fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students to create an original Mother's Day greeting card expressing their feelings about their moms. More than 40,000 entries were judged on writing, illustration, originality and sincerity of expression.

"Florence brought so much integrity and enthusiasm to the role of 'Carol Brady' that to fans of all ages she is the all-American mom," said Randy Gier, senior vice president- marketing, KFC Corporation. "KFC is delighted to have her associated with our national greeting card contest."

Most recently, Henderson was Rosie O'Donnell's special guest on the talk show queen's successful two week run in Los Angeles. With six appearances -- which included skits, on-location segments and duets with Rosie -- viewers were renaming it "The Ro & Flo Show." Henderson also recently appeared on an episode of the ABC-TV hit sitcom, "Ellen," and is currently portraying Harry Anderson's mother on CBS's hit comedy, "Dave's World."

Hallmark Cards, Inc. will produce the grand-prize winning card, which will be on sale exclusively in 5,000 Hallmark Gold Crown stores nationwide for Mother's Day 1997.

The top three cards and their creators are featured in the May 12 issue of Family Circle magazine. Also, the 41 semifinalists' and nine finalists' cards are exhibited at the Empire State Building in New York throughout the month of May.

KFC first launched the All-American Salute to Mother's Day greeting card contest in 1982 as an educational and creative outlet for children to convey their feelings for their moms. The contest continues a tradition at KFC of honoring moms on Mother's Day, the company's biggest sales day of the year.
