LOUISVILLE, KY, May 31, 1996 - Detective Charles Grenig of the Polk County, Fla., Sheriff's Office received the 1995 Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Corp., Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement.

Grenig and the Polk County Sheriff's Department were recently honored at a banquet in Louisville, Ky., for quick thinking and heroic efforts in apprehending a suspect following a robbery at a KFC restaurant in Lakeland, Fla. The arrest was part of a stakeout operation set up following a number of thefts at retail stores in Bartow.

On the evening of June 1, 1995, Detective Grenig parked across the street from the KFC restaurant at 5204 South Florida Ave., and saw two masked gunmen enter the restaurant. After pistol-whipping the assistant manager, the gunmen robbed both the restaurant and a customer.

Detective Grenig, after calling for backup, went to the back of the building and confronted the two gunmen as they ran out. Gunfire was exchanged and Grenig was shot twice. Although wounded, he continued to describe to dispatchers the suspects and the vehicle in which they fled.

"It's an honor to be able to recognize the efforts of the law enforcement community," said Chris Duncan, sr. director, loss prevention. "Detective Grenig's courage and dedication are outstanding examples of excellent law enforcement efforts."

"The support we've received from the law enforcement community - their efforts, skill, professionalism under pressure and their commitment - has made a difference," said KFC President and CEO David Novak. "It has helped simplify the lives and jobs of our restaurant general managers and helped make KFC restaurants safer for its customers and employees."

The annual award acknowledges extraordinary efforts of police officers - many of whom go unrecognized - in preventing and solving crimes at KFC restaurants.

Regional KFC operations managers nominate police departments that have provided exceptional support during the year. Winners are selected by a panel of federal and local law enforcement officers and senior KFC management.
