Guinness book of records declares eleven-ton pie a world record

LOUISVILLE, KY. (February 20, 1996) - It's official. Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp., (KFC) announced today it has been certified by the Book of Records as maker of the "world's largest meat pie." Guinness Book officials confirmed that the 22,178 pound chicken pot pie - which the company built last October to celebrate the national launch of its first pot pie product, Chunky Chicken Pot Pie - smashed the previous Guinness world record by more than a ton.

To break the GUINNESS BOOK WORLD RECORD on October 18, 1995, KFC built a chicken pot pie measuring 12 feet in diameter by four feet deep. This easily topped the previous record of 19,908 pounds, set in England in 1988.

Made with the same filling and crusts as its smaller restaurant counterpart, KFC's World's Largest Pot Pie required 9,000 pounds of chicken pieces, 1,500 gallons of chunky savory pie filling created especially for KFC by Campbell Soup Company.

Some 200 pounds of flour was used in the more than 1,000 individual Pepperidge Farm crusts that topped the pie. The jumbo pie was filled with more than 600,000 peas, 300,000 carrot pieces, 240,000 potato pieces, 180,000 chicken pieces. The record was set with the assistance of the Arthur D. Little Company, which created the custom cooking vessel.

The eight-hour assembly and cooking of the pot pie began at 4:00 a.m. with a team of more than a dozen chefs. The pie was cooked with a special steam-heating system built into the custom-made cooking vessel. Officials from the Guinness Book of Records, New York City's Bureau of Weights and Measures, and the New York City Department of Health monitored the process.

KFC donated the contents of the pie to City Harvest, a not-for-profit organization serving New York's hungry. The donation fed approximately 20,000 of New York's homeless people and families.
