LOUISVILLE, Ky. (February 4, 1997) — Seven Boston “judges” were singing “Love Me Tender” after declaring KFC’s Tender Roast® chicken their favorite rotisserie chicken in Boston.

According to the Boston Herald, KFC Tender Roast pieces triumphed over four other rotisserie chickens in the taste test — three from area supermarkets (which came in second, third and fifth) and from Boston Market (which came in fourth).

The judges included five “pit masters” at Boston-area barbecue restaurants. In the blind taste test, the judges rated KFC’s Tender Roast the highest, saying that the meat was “very tasty and moist,” with an “excellent flavor” that “went throughout the meat.”

KFC introduced Tender Roast pieces in March 1996, replacing Colonel’s Rotisserie Gold®, which was a whole-roasted chicken. To date, KFC has sold nearly twice as much Tender Roast chicken as Colonel’s Rotisserie Gold®, during its last year.

“Since customers can mix Tender Roast chicken with their favorite fried chicken offerings, KFC is better able to satisfy the family that has both fried and roasted chicken lovers,” said Randy Gier, KFC senior vice president-marketing.

With Tender Roast pieces, KFC is offering roasted chicken lovers what they’ve been asking for — roasted chicken by the piece. Gier added that nearly one-third of Tender Roast customers mix their orders with KFC’s fried chicken favorites — Original Recipe® and Extra Tasty Crispy™.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp. (KFC), based in Louisville, Ky., is the world’s most popular chicken restaurant chain specializing in both fried and roasted chicken pieces and homestyle sides.
