LOUISVILLE, KY., February 24, 1997 - Forget winter! It's barbecue time at your local KFC restaurant. New Honey BBQ-flavored Tender Roast® chicken is now in KFC's 5,000 restaurants in the United States.
Honey BBQ Tender Roast starts with KFC's Tender Roast® chicken pieces that have been generously dipped in a thick hickory-flavored sauce with a touch of honey. KFC restaurants are introducing the new chicken dish with special offers that include a leg and a thigh of Honey BBQ Tender Roast and two homestyle sides. Prices vary around the country but range generally from $2.99 to $3.49.
A commercial introducing Honey BBQ Tender Roast is based on the premise that "it's not barbecue if it's not messy." A young lad puts his hands, face and heart into eating his Honey BBQ Tender Roast, attentively watched by his pet dogs. When their small master finishes his meal, the dogs help "wash" the boy's face -- much to his giggling delight. Produced by Young and Rubicam/New York, the commercial airs on national TV from February 24 through March 30.
Honey BBQ Tender Roast was developed through extensive testing of various styles of barbecue sauces. Barbecue sauce preferences are as individual as the cooks who create them and as personal as the people who eat them. Regional preferences can range from very hot and spicy to a sweet, pineapple concoction.
"Developing a sauce that would appeal to a wide range of tastes was our challenge," said Randy Gier, KFC's senior vice president-marketing. "We needed a flavor with universal appeal. And, actually, our customers helped us create this new product -- they had been requesting our Honey BBQ-flavored Wings sauce as a dip for their chicken."
Working with that popular Honey BBQ sauce as a base, KFC's new products team researched barbecue preferences among customers. Requests for a smokier, less sweet flavor have helped create new Honey BBQ Tender Roast. "We knew that we were on the right track because the Honey BBQ Wings sauce had no regional ties. It was popular with KFC customers all across the country," said Gier.
Honey BBQ Tender Roast is the latest in a series of exciting new products introduced by KFC over the past 18 months. These include The Colonel's Crispy Strips® (August 1995), Chunky Chicken Pot Pie (October 1995) and Tender Roast Chicken Pieces (March 1996).
Kentucky Fried Chicken Corp. (KFC), based in Louisville, Ky., is the world's most popular chicken restaurant chain specializing in both fried and roasted chicken pieces and homestyle sides.
